As telehealth becomes an increasingly vital and accepted component of healthcare delivery, virtual lactation support can make a meaningful impact. This webinar explores the evolving landscape of lactation telehealth and highlights its role in improving access to care, supporting diverse populations, and addressing breastfeeding challenges through innovative digital platforms with two leading lactation telehealth subject matter experts, Dr Larissa Luce and Dr Lori Uscher-Pines.

Attendees will gain insights into best practices for virtual lactation consultations, strategies to promote equitable access, and the latest tools and technologies enhancing remote support. This session will provide actionable guidance for integrating telehealth into lactation services to improve outcomes for parents and children alike.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the core components of lactation telehealth, including the definition, types, common technologies, privacy, and the impact of IBLCE® guiding documents.
  2. Apply clinical best practices in lactation telehealth.
  3. Explain the current state of research on lactation telehealth.

Larissa Luce DHSc, RD, LD, IBCLC, PMH-C is an IBCLC and Registered Dietitian. She obtained her Doctorate of Health Sciences from A.T. Still University. Dr Luce is the Director of Clinical Services at Nest Collaborative. She is passionate about providing proactive and preventive perinatal and child health care. Dr Luce has served as an advisory board member for the South Carolina Emergency Prep Initiative Grant and as a board member for Symptone, a non-profit organisation on a mission to promote representation of BIPOC skin tones in medical education. She acts as a dissertation committee member and mentors doctoral candidates through innovative research in maternal health, nutrition, and public health. Dr Luce has been a frequent guest on local news channels and podcasts discussing health, wellness, lactation, and nutrition. She is the author of What Do Babies Eat?. Originally from Boston, Dr Luce currently resides in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with her husband and three sons. She enjoys reading, crocheting, and mastering the art of sourdough baking.


Lori Uscher-Pines PhD, MSc is a senior policy researcher at RAND. Her research interests include telehealth, maternal and child health, behavioural health, and health disparities. She recently completed a digital randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of virtual breastfeeding support via mobile app and is now leading a trial of virtual doula services in rural communities. She is a mixed methods researcher who has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications. Dr Uscher-Pines earned her PhD in health policy and management from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and her MSc in international relations from the London School of Economics.


Lilly Hubschman Shahar (moderator) DNP, RN, NNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C is an IBCLC and a doctorally-prepared nurse practitioner with a career-long dedication to maternal/child health. For over 15 years, Dr Hubschman-Shahar has delivered high-impact patient care and provided strategic guidance to healthcare organisations. Dr Hubschman-Shahar’s work is grounded in her commitment to human-centred design and systems thinking. Her work in lactation telehealth was recognised by Arizona State University’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation as the nominee for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Outstanding DNP Project / Excellence in Advancing Nursing Practice Award. Dr Hubschman-Shahar is the author of peer-reviewed journal articles and has been featured as a subject matter expert in print and digital media. She resides in the Washington, DC area with her husband, her two rescue pups, and her two young daughters whose resilience in their breastfeeding journeys provides continuous inspiration in her work.
